I've used two Vniti FIE blades Epee Blade - Vniti FIE Bare Electric twice a week for a month. They haven't needed straightening and have taken just a slight, desirable bend. I've also noticed they are not very susceptible to rust, and while there are some marks on the edges, they haven't developed stress risers (sharp nicks). That may have something to do with their reputation for durability. This is just an interim report, but I'm happy so far. 9Oct08--I use a French grip. The handle, with a hard plastic core, broke, and with it the tang. I'm inclined to blame the handle. 28 July 2010--It's been two years and both blades are going strong. Yes, both blades. I used to love using the Uhlmann BF blades but they never could last more than a few seasons of practice and competition before breaking. However,I have yet to break any of my Vniti blades(three years). I know I am a bit rough with my weapons since I use them for competition, practice, and lessons at least three times a week or more. I've been using my Vniti blade for about a year now and it has suffered no awkward bends, no stress risers, is seemingly impervious to rust (most likely due to the naturally forming Vanadium Oxide coating that gives it its black appearance), and looks like it will last a long time to come. The other guys in my fencing club tell me that they've seen Vnitis last for five years or more before finally breaking, which is impeccable for an epee. The blades tend to be somewhat flexible, so if flicking is your style, you'll find this blade well suited for that purpose. The blade, however, IS on the heavy side (hence the four stars, not five), and the medium stiffness can be a definite downside for some fencers who prefer more rigid blades. I fence posted up with a PBT French grip. The Vniti bell guard is also worth checking out. It's a solid, lightweight piece of aluminum, and mine has yet to have a dent in it (only thousands of scratches). If the weight of this blade is too much... Read more |
