The poor quality control of new vinyl records never ceases to amaze me. Here we have an "audiophile" pressing from a dedicated record company, of one of progressive rock's finest hours. Well, 80 minutes, in fact. The first three sides impressed me greatly; they are totally flawless sides, with an even more beautiful restoration of the original master sound than I could have hoped for. The fourth side, well, it's not perfect. It's not even really acceptable. Back in the eighties when records were still pressed routinely by all the labels, your basic record from the local record store would generally be in much better condition than this side. It seems to contain "fuzzy" grooves, places where the press has gone awry, and the resulting distortions which crop up for a second or two at those spots is pretty bad. 2.0 out of 5 stars Not happy, October 12, 2011
This review is from: Tales From Topographic Oceans (180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl/ Ltd. Ed./ Gatefold Cover) (Vinyl)
I love Tales it is one of my favorite records I have listened to it for years . I just got back into listening to vinyl and have a very nice set up, so I was really excited to get this, my original copy was worn and had some major pops. This new reissue is beautiful looking the colors are bright and vibrant it looks really great the vinyl thick and heavy..........BUT when I played it it just was DEAD...it sounds like a COPY of the original..... I A/B'd it against my old copy.... first off it is a lot lower in volume, but the sound is just SO flat sounding it doesn't breath or sound alive like the original. I really tried to like it, after shelling out the $$$ but no matter what it just didn't come close to the original. You can get a Near Mint copy of the 73 pressing for half the price. I am very picky and I know the original vinyl well and I am tracking at 1.7 grams so take that into account but if you are looking for High quality audio this is not it. It was a major let down and I... Read more
