Product Description
Canyoning descender. Descender with three braking positions, designed for use with canyoning descent techniques. Can be used on double ropes, but certain braking positions may not be usable depending on the ropes' diameter. Weight 3.2oz.
- Three different braking positions to choose from before beginning descent depending on the user's weight, the rope's diameter & the terrain
- Two supplementary braking spurs allow friction to be increased during descent
- A carabiner with a cross section of 12 mm (like an ATTACHE) provides a tight fit in the small hole, creating a rigid carabiner / descender unit
- Designed to be used w/the "Rapid" technique, which prevents the formation of a lark's head knot around the body & reduces kinks in the rope, w/o decreasing braking friction
- For use with ropes from 8 to 13 mm. Designed for single rope

I bought the Pirana to provide an emergency descender/belay device that would give me lots of options for braking power, rope size, person's weight, and provide an easy, secure lock-off. I love Petzl's products, and this was typical of their innovation. Well worth the money - but two oddities to note: The Pirana will ONLY take a biner like the Attache or William - and just barely! I bought both an Attache and a William when I ordered the Pirana, and could only get the Attache to fit through the hole, after a lot of twisting and shoving. The result is a biner/descender unit which is very rigid. This helps avoid cross-loading and dropping the descender when threading the rope, but also takes getting used to when carrying it on a harness or actually using it. Different, but very functional. I think I'll be using it as my main descender, rather than putting it in the emergency gear bag. My favorite descender, By sarysa (CA USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Petzl Pirana Canyoning Descender (Misc.) I'm a vertical caver with limited canyoning experience. Having used a Petzl Stop, Rack/Micro Rack, and figure eight, the Petzl Pirana is absolutely my favorite rappel device. Vertical caving frequently involves tight squeezes, and the Pirana makes it easy. It doesn't get stuck like the Stop does on 11mm ropes, and is much less bulky than the rack. It's also much safer than the figure eight, having far more speed options and not requiring removing the device from the biner to load/unload. Changeovers are surprisingly easy, though I'm small, so it's easier for me to lock than it is for larger cavers. The Pirana isn't recommended for extremely long or arduous drops, as it requires the user to constantly hold onto the rope, but it's still great for quick pops and I've used mine in nearly 4000 feet of combined descents; it hardly has any scars of use. I'll be using mine for years to come. Going Down, By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Petzl Pirana Canyoning Descender (Misc.) This is the best descender I have ever used. It gives me so many options from a fast decent to a full stop. Great product. |
